Looking back, Karon's love for decorating started as a child when she would go antiquing with her parents. When she was twelve, she found her first blue and white spode plate in an old antique store called Theive's Market, in Alexandria, Virginia.
When she is asked what inspires her, she often thinks back to her childhood. Her parents instilled in her an appreciation for history, art, antiques and travel.
Her inspiration for decorating is drawn from the people she meets, the places she visits, photographs, and books. . . lots and lots of books!
Karon started decorating the small gift shop inside Iowa Outdoor Products, the small garden center she and her husband own in Des Moines, Iowa. Soon, customers discovered a wonderful place to buy home accessories and gifts not found anywhere else. Karon often jokes that she would sneak crystal candle sticks in next to the Miracle-Gro. It worked for a while, but eventually her husband Shane said she needed to get her own store.
From there, her dream became a reality when a 5000 square-foot storefront was opened in 2014. Boxwoods has now become a destination shopping experience in the heart of the Midwest.
I hope that Boxwoods is another source of inspiration to help you create a comfortable, casual home that reflects your style and personality. It’s the art you hang on your walls and the objects you place in a room that tell the story about who you are.
