Finding the Perfect Side Table

July 16, 2019

There are so many different tables out there to choose from, how do you know which one is right for your sofa or chair?

Are you buying a side table, a lamp table or an end table? Really, they are all the same, basically you are just describing where you are putting it and what you are putting on it. Is your style contemporary with a little glass or marble? Do you love a classic Pembroke next to your chesterfield?

Here are a few things to consider when choosing a side table.

Table Height

First, measure the arm height of your sofa or chair, it’s important to remember this when selecting a table. You want to be able to reach over at shoulder height of the arm of your sofa to place a glass or turn on a lamp. The rule of thumb is that its surface area should be equal to or just below the height of the sofa arms. For a standard sofa, that's around 25 inches.

The bottom of a lampshade shouldn't fall higher than eye-level when you're seated on the sofa or chair that's placed next to the lamp. Two chairs call for a small drink table, and garden stool, I like to angle the chairs slightly to make for better conversation.

Table Shape

This will depend on how your furniture is arranged. Are your sofa arms touching to form an L shape? Then you should use a round or square table in that square shaped space, with square or rectangle tables on each end of the sofas.

If you have a sliver of a space at the end of your sofa and need a small end table, a narrow rectangle table will do the trick, but don’t expect to put anything on it other than your glass of wine.

OK, now that we are done with the formalities, let’s get to the fun part!

Table Style

For me, it is the classic Pembroke on each side of my chesterfield. Rattan side tables can add a different texture and casual feel to your room. We have some nice rattan tables in the store right now.

If you like a little glam in your room, try a gold metal side table with a marble top. These are perfect next to any sofa or chair. If your side tables are square or rectangle, a round coffee table will break up the sharp corners.

With all the wood in your room, an upholstered ottoman would add some color and pattern to the mix and makes for comfy place for your feet after a long day at work.
